I recently ­launched a new WordPress-based site for Mika Community Development Corporation, a non-profit that works with low-income Latino immigrants, which I have previously written about.  I had the opportunity to photograph and experience their work at first hand in all of the four neighborhoods they work in.  It was a unique experience to both capture photos of their work and design the space where they can tell their story.  The more I work in the online and new media space, the more I realize that this is specifically what I want to help non-profits do.

I chose the WordPress platform for this project for a number of reasons.  The first is that it is easy to create and just as easy tochange content on this platform.  Mika has a number of events that they do throughout the year, and they needed to be able to feature these events on their website easily and then take them down when the event is over.

The second reason is that they wanted the website to be social media optimized, which can be done easily with the plug-ins available to the WordPress platform.  These days, it’s not just about being Search Engine Optimized, but also about being found on Social Networks.  With Facebook surpassing Google a few months ago in being the most visited website on the internet, it is increasingly important to be Facebook optimizedas well.

The third reason is that developing in WordPress is very cost effective.  I decided to customize a theme rather than build one from scratch on this project.  This saved Mika a significant amount of money, which for a small non-profit goes a long way.  While having a custom WordPress theme is necessary for many businesses and large non-profits, customizing an already built theme can be a great option for non-profits and NGOs that have budget concerns.

My goal for this project was to provide Mika a website that made it easy for them to share their story.  I wanted it to be easy to use, and to tap into the vast possibilities of Social Media Marketing. It was truly an honor to work with Mika on this project.
